Fueling the Fires of Love

Before George Floyd’s murder, Seth and I began making plans for a Summer Solstice celebration at Spativa Wellness Boutique in Ashland. In the process, we talked about what the sun represents for us.

The sun is fire. The sun is light. The sun calls us to action. The sun invites us into the fields and gardens and mountains to dig and plant and harvest and explore. The sun grows beautiful, edible, medicinal, and life-giving things. The sun is the center around which our planet dances, and it’s the radiance that burns at the core of us all.

We wanted a title for our event that captured the intersection between this active, generative, bright nature of the sun and our mission to spread love and beauty in the world. Seth thought “Activate Love” sounded a bit too much like a chemistry experiment, so we landed on “Radiate Love.” And I’m into it. Because it holds our intention even more fully: to experience Love as not just a warm feeing, but a call to action. Many, many actions.

Fires of love

Fires of love

In the past couple weeks since George Floyd’s murder, it’s been difficult for me to get into a celebratory event-planning mindset, to be quite honest. And yet, as we’ve been turning our ideas into soul-care raffles and ritual bundles, invitations, and plans for a simple ritual, the fires inside of me are getting stoked by anger and hope.

Like so many of us, I am finally seeing through my privilege enough to know that I can no longer ignore the systemic racism that has been plaguing this continent for the past 400+ years. I am angry at the structures and individuals who overtly perpetuate racist policies and violent actions, and I am burning with awareness that, in my complacency, I have been a part of the problem, too.

And yet, hope thrives! I am seeing so many white folks who are also trying to educate themselves about their privilege and the role they can play in dismantling systems of oppression. The streets are filled with allies, copies of Me and White Supremacy can’t be printed fast enough, and funding is being diverted from police forces to social services and education. YES!!

THIS is radiant love. THIS is the sun’s work. We are fanning the flames of our outrage with a vision for a better, safer world full of anti-racist people and policies. And love, love is what fuels that fire. Endlessly. Love of our shared humanity. Love of our differences. Love of evolving into the best versions of ourselves we can be.

And so, I am starting to get more energized about the Celebration of the Sun that Seth and I will be hosting on June 20th from 11-4 at Spativa Wellness Boutique in Ashland! We will hold a simple ritual at 11:00 with the intention of stoking our radiant cores to sustain our fires of loving action. Please join us!

After the ritual, we will be offering free CBD Elixirs to kick back with and a pop-up apothecary full of Fathers’ Day gifts and goods for ongoing self-care, and I’ll be offering free tarot card readings for anyone who could use some soul care right now. AND we are going to raffle off a basket loaded with healing love. All of the proceeds from the raffle will go to Black Lives Matter!

If you can’t make it to the live event, please join us virtually! You can buy raffle tickets for the Soul Care Package here, and we will be livestreaming the ritual on Facebook so you can participate from the comfort of your home. We also have Ritual Bundles that you can order for this (or any) ritual!

May you feed your inner fires with love, stoke them with longings for justice, and heed their call to action. Rest and repeat. xo

Recipe for a Simple DIY Ritual

Find a clear, quiet space with no distractions.

Create a small altar space with a candle, flowers, stones, a bowl of water, or any other treasures that bring you a sense of joy and grounding. We like to include an item to represent each element (air, fire, water, and earth).

Facing East, invite in the element Air! You can do this through intentional breathing, burning incense, brushing yourself with a feather, or using your voice to invite in all the qualities the East and Air represent to you. And then state, "Welcome East, Welcome Air!"

Turning to the South, invite in Fire! Perhaps you want to burn some mugwort, light a candle or sparkler, breathe fire breaths, or use your words to speak about all that Fire and South means to you. "Welcome South, Welcome Air!"

Turning to the West, call in Water! This is a great time to spray some hydrosol, dip you fingers in a bowl of water, move your body like water, and invite in all that Water and West mean to you. "Welcome West! Welcome Water!"

Turning to the North, beckon Earth! Feel the weight of the quartz and place it on your heart, touch the earth, feel into your physical form, and invite in all that Earth and North mean to you. "Welcome Earth! Welcome North!"

You may also want to call in your ancestors, spirit guides, or beloveds who are far away.

And now the body of the ceremony is up to you. Meditate, dance, do sun salutations, chant, journal, draw, pull tarot cards....whatever moves you! This is a great time to release old stories and patterns, set intentions, invite in the new, and to listen to your highest self. It's also an excellent space to fill up with gratitude.

When your ritual feels complete, take a moment to thank all the energies you have invited into your circle and release them into the ether.

We give thanks for the blessings that are already on their way!
